After a few hours, the adults finish their intricate sand-city.

Pangolins are small mammals. They eat ants. They did not invent the internet. Presently, they are prime suspects for causing the coronavirus outbreak. Let’s assume that’s true. Let’s assume that a pangolin has brought the world to its knees. Crashed our financial markets. Overrun our hospitals. Put us all in quarantine. Profoundly disrupted normal life. Remember, pangolins eat ants.

Now imagine a man and a woman building a sandcastle on the beach. They have graduated from top universities and run powerful government organizations. They are building the castle for their children, who sleep back at the house, watched over by their grandparents. The parents work on the castle from daybreak.

After a few hours, the adults finish their intricate sand-city. There are buildings with windows, streets, taxis, and even a small Statue of Liberty. The parents stand up, brush off their knees, rest their hands on their hips, and smile at one another.

The parents leave to fetch their children, everything right with the world, the tremendous surprise still on its way. They will return after lunch.
